Blankenship has 5 children and three grandchildren. He has taken care of a trauma survivor for nearly a year since she left ICU in April of 2016. He has also completed 5 IronMan events, dozens of marathons and dozens of smaller triathlons. Blankenship was a guide for a blind athlete in the 2012 Boston Marathon and a guide for the 2015 Para-Olympic Nationals Triathlon and assisted in the training of IronMan para-triathlete Brand Adame.
